Every year, as we approach the season of the ancestors, where the veil between the living and the great beyond is said to become thin, I prepare an altar for the Ancestor Fortnight, known as Pitru Paksha in the Vedic Tradition. Ancestors are honored in different ways, depending on lineage and culture (think of the Day of the Dead, Halloween, Samhain, Obon, Etc.).
Many of us reluctantly carry the burdens of those who came before us. Ancestor worship is one way that we can begin to process and heal inherited traumas, patterns, and familial burdens. Working with ancestors who have unfinished business in the land of the living can help us to shake off the weight that we carry for them after they have passed. We can also work with ancestors who we feel connected to for any reason at all. The people we love, and miss. The ancestors who blessed us. Through the ancestral altar we connect with the thread that goes back to the beginning ~ we ask for their blessings, and we ask for them to take responsibility for themselves, to take their burdens off of us, so that we can do our duty here on earth, unbound by the weight of the past, by things we have perhaps unknowingly inherited.
In this class we will learn a bit about how we can begin the process of untangling these knots through daily ritual. This is an entry level class on creating an ancestral altar, including its contents, rules, and offerings, so that you will know how to honor your ancestors while the veil is thin.
